Silo City Phase 1- American Malthouse Lofts
Buffalo, NY | Architecture, Civil Engineering, Interiors & Planning, and Historic Preservation | Completed 2025
Located within Buffalo’s iconic grain elevator district, Silo City Phase I transformed the historic American Malting Complex into a vibrant mixed-use and residential community. The project adaptively reused the early-20th-century malt house and warehouse structures to create loft-style apartments while preserving the site’s powerful industrial character. Careful integration of new building systems, life-safety upgrades, and contemporary amenities, such as a fitness center and exhibition space, was balanced with the conservation of original concrete, steel, and masonry fabric. Phase I set the foundation for Silo City’s broader revitalization, reestablishing the waterfront complex as a living part of Buffalo’s urban fabric and a model for large-scale industrial reuse.
